Why tank condition matters
OFTEC advises that domestic oil tanks should be visually checked by a competent person as part of the annual boiler service. Leaks can cause expensive damage and environmental contamination.
Tank siting and fire separation
Oil tanks need appropriate separation from buildings, openings, boundaries, flues and ignition risks. Where normal separation distances cannot be achieved, suitable fire-protection measures may be needed.
What is a bunded tank?
A bund provides secondary containment around the stored fuel. Depending on the location and pollution risk, bunding may be required or strongly recommended.
Do supply pipes matter?
Yes. The fuel pipeline between the tank and boiler must be appropriate for the installation and protected from damage. Tank and pipework should be considered together when planning a new oil-heating system.
